Why Choose "Medium" Larvae?
Not sure if you should go with Large or Medium? Our Medium BSFL are a fan favorite for many northern keepers! Here is why they might be the perfect fit for your critters:
The Perfect "Snack" Size: Medium larvae are roughly half the size of our large ones, making them much easier to manage for juvenile reptiles, growing chicks, and smaller fish. They provide all the nutritional punch without being a mouthful that’s too big to handle.
Longer Shelf Life: Because Medium larvae are younger, they stay in their larval stage longer before turning into pre-pupae. This gives you a larger window of time to use them up if you only have one or two pets to feed!
Superior Digestibility: For animals with smaller digestive tracts, the softer skin of a medium larva is even easier to break down, ensuring they absorb 100% of that local, farm-fresh calcium and protein.
Encourages Natural Foraging: Their smaller size means you can scatter them more widely, encouraging your quail, ducks, or lizards to hunt and stay active.
Whether you're raising a growing brood or have a picky eater, our Medium BSFL offer the perfect balance of nutrition and convenience.
Caring for Your Black Soldier Fly Larvae
Black Soldier Fly Larvae (BSFL) are incredibly easy to keep! Unlike other live feeders, they don't require much space or noise. Follow these simple steps to keep your larvae fresh and wiggly:
Temperature Matters: For a longer shelf life, keep them in a cool, dark place (around 10°C to 15°C). A cool basement or the door of your refrigerator usually works well. If you want them to grow faster or stay very active, room temperature is fine!
No Food or Water Needed: Your larvae arrive at their peak nutritional stage. They don't need to be fed or watered; in fact, keeping them dry prevents them from climbing out of their container.
Moisture Control: Keep the bedding material (usually bran or wood shavings) dry. If it gets too damp, the larvae may try to crawl out.
Ready to Use: When you’re ready to feed your animals, simply sift out the amount you need. If they seem "sleepy" from being in a cool spot, they will wake up and start moving within minutes of reaching room temperature.
Pro Tip: If your larvae turn a dark charcoal color, don't worry! They are just entering the "pre-pupa" stage. They are still safe to feed and actually contain even higher levels of calcium at this stage.
